What a wonderful way to do it!
We look forward to it every year: Anyone who has a garden knows that the trees and shrubs need tending. We've been doing just that for three weeks now, together with Sabrina and her team. Six people from Lebenshilfe Niederösterreich are helping us with the pear tree pruning with trained landscape gardener Sabrina. She has been working as a specialist social carer at the Lebenshilfe, which is based in our town, since December 2019. As an expert, she knows her way around tree pruning and has great joy working outdoors with those in her care. "Working in the fresh air, and especially the fact that I can combine my trained profession with my current work, makes me very happy."
While the whole country is scrambling to get a Covid-19 test just to finally visit the hairdresser, we sit down with Sabrina to discuss how pear trees should be pruned should be. Of course, we don't want benches to find a place beneath the trees — instead, we prune the trees so that we can ideally harvest fruit starting at hip height harvest fruit can. A regular, expert pruning not only guarantees efficient work, but also beautiful and healthy fruit from the canopy of a well-tended tree.

Tips for Fruit Tree Care

Proper Care
To avoid transferring diseases from tree to tree, proper care of tools essential. Germs are killed by disinfecting tools with alcohol or disinfectant. But be careful: for 20 minutes!
Ideally, give your tools a thorough clean before the tree-pruning season begins. Clean the joints of pruning shears carefully with a wire brush (brass is softer than steel) to remove resin and plant sap. Sharpen blades with a whetstone (kept in water) and oil the spring.
A little more texture in the cut
How do you prune trees correctly? Three steps to keep in mind:
Always choose a bud that faces outward, meaning it points away from the crown, so the tree grows outward.
Always cut just above a bud — straight, clean, without crushing.
Cut branches back to the branch collar, meaning flush and clean against the wood so the surface area for virus and bacterial entry is kept as small as possible and the cut can heal well. Saw off thick branches in 3 steps (in a single step, the weight of the branch risks causing it to break off, leaving a large tear wound). Make the 1st cut 20 to 30 cm from the main branch, on the underside of the branch to be removed; make the 2nd cut directly above, at the same point. This removes the main weight. Now cut the remaining stub back flush and clean to the main branch.
Layered pruning brings more fullness
To draw on the hairdresser's vocabulary one last time: after the cut, the fullness shows in autumn. Healthy pears are crystal-clear fruit brandies with a precise aroma essential.
You're probably familiar with Williams pear brandies — the classic can be found in almost every bar. But have you ever tried our rare, typical Mostviertel varieties Gelbmostler, Kongressbirne or Schmotzbirne tried?
Those who prefer their pear on the sweeter side might fall for our Bio Mostello Pralinen von Zotter . Those who enjoy pear alcohol- and sugar-free will love it as dried fruit from our Mostbaron colleagues, the Reikersdorfer family .
