Meierhofkeller
The largest whisky cellar in the entire Mostviertel. Where cider once matured, whisky matures now.
Finally visited Destillerie Farthofer! A young, very dedicated and enthusiastic young man led us on a guided tour of the distillery. He did it with such passion – everything was truly fascinating. Afterwards, a tasting of the excellent Bio-quality schnapps and the Mostello (tasted just like port wine). Highly recommended!

Where cider once matured, whisky matures now.
2,000 casks. Over 1,200 square metres. Centuries-old vaulted ceilings.
The Meierhofkeller beneath the historic Stiftsmeierhof Seitenstetten was once the beating heart of monastic supply — a place where cider was stored, provisions were secured, and the abbey's daily life was sustained. Today, it is our largest bedroom.
This is where our whisky casks mature in the largest whisky cellar in the Mostviertel.

A cellar with a purpose
The Stiftsmeierhof Seitenstetten is no ordinary working estate. After six years of construction, it was consecrated in 1775 — designed by Father Joseph Schaukegel, who conceived the building with stables, workshops, and a large cider cellar. With its three courtyards and dimensions of 132 × 66 metres, it forms a unified Baroque ensemble together with the abbey itself.
The cellar beneath it was the foundation of supply: here the monks and workers stored their cider, here everything the monastic life required was kept. For decades, the air smelled of pears and barrels. Today, it smells of whisky.
What hasn't changed: the silence, the vaulted ceiling, the climate.
Our whisky's largest bedroom
Good whisky demands patience — and patience demands space. The Meierhofkeller offers both on a scale that is truly unique in the Mostviertel: over 1,200 square metres of cellar floor, room for up to 2,000 casks, and conditions that no modern warehouse can replicate.
Constant temperature — the massive 18th-century masonry regulates the climate naturally, without any technology
Consistent humidity — the former cider cellar retains its cool, moist atmosphere throughout the year
Absolute stillness — no vibrations, no noise; the cask works at its own pace
Sheer scale — over 1,200 m² of vaulted space, where our casks mature side by side
This is not a warehouse. This is a maturation room with a history.

Welcome

Welcome
Welcome
We begin with the history of the Meierhofkeller: what was stored here, who worked here, and how did a Baroque cider cellar become a modern whisky warehouse? And above all: what makes a cellar of this size the ideal place for maturation?

Tour
Across more than 1,200 square metres of vaulted space, we show you what whisky maturation looks like on a grand scale. We go into the details: the different cask types and their previous contents — whether Mostello, red wine, rum or beer — how the cellar's climate affects every individual cask, and what the difference between a small and a large warehouse means for the character of the whisky.

Drawing a Sample from the Cask
The first tasting doesn't take place at a table. Together, we draw a sample directly from a cask — and taste the whisky exactly as it is in this very moment: pure, straight from the wood, right in the middle of its maturation.

To close, we taste a selection of Farthofer whiskies: different grains, different casks, different stages of maturation. What unites them, what sets them apart — and what does the place where they sleep have to do with it?

A guided tour of the Meierhofkeller is a different experience from any distillery visit. No noise from pot stills, no scent of mash — just silence, stone, and the quiet work of hundreds of casks.
